Working for the Mouse

Posted on by If you follow my personal Instagram account, you have likely noticed that I am living in the “Happiest Place on Earth,” also known as Walt Disney World.  And yes, I graduated college early so I could essentially take an eight month vacation to Disney World.

Brighouse I grew up with a love for everything Disney. I owned every princess costume available, along with the matching shoes (a story my parents still will not let me forget.) We visited Disney World more than I could ever count, my strongest childhood memories were spent in the parks, my family’s Christmas tree still only contains Disney character ornaments, and my entire life I dreamed of growing up and someday getting the chance to work for the company.

I had already worked my butt off in IU’s business school for three years, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could do something after college that would continue to challenge me in new ways. Last fall, I began researching the different programs available at Disney. The most recurring theme being, “It will be nearly impossible to land any of Disney’s professional internships.” Without any contacts or connections with the company, besides being a huge fan, I instantly began applying for positions. You’ll fail if you don’t even try.

…Months of waiting and seven interviews later, I landed a position!! A few weeks after signing my offer letter, I rented an overpriced cap and gown, showed up fashionably late to my own college graduation, moved out of my beloved Tridelta sorority house and headed south.

I am now in my sixth month of living in the Orlando area. My apartment complex is in the closest possible location to the main entrance of Walt Disney World. I spend my days in an office and my evenings gallivanting around Disney parks and my little town of Celebration, Florida. (Not joking, my town is actually named Celebration. Thanks Walt 🙂 )

I am so thankful I had the courage to finish my class requirements early, move away and take this once in a lifetime opportunity. It definitely hasn’t been easy, but so far, this has been one of the greatest experiences I could have imagined.

It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.
