Mermaid Hair Elixir

Posted on by 4 comments

Hi Ladies!

For the last few months, I have been focusing on restoring the strength and health back into my hair. I have posted about a coconut oil mask in the past, but now I have a coconut hair mask 2.0! I want to call it the mermaid hair elixir, because 1) every girl wants long healthy mermaid hair and 2) the word “elixir” is just way cooler sounding than “mixture,” plus this hair mask is truly a magical potion!

I was introduced to castor oil as a hair treatment within the last year. I use it on its own and in this mask treatment, and can definitely see the benefit from it. Castor oil is full of omega 6 fatty acids and ricinoleic acid which both help to improve blood flow to the scalp and support hair growth. Coconut oil will also help to stimulate hair growth and increase shine. The argan oil will help to make hair silky and prevent split ends. Massaging these oils into your scalp will help to strengthen your hair roots, growing longer, healthier hair.

My hair has been so damaged recently that I have been trying to use this mask at least every two weeks to get the healthier hair I am after. I stocked up on some supplies to create my homemade Mermaid Hair Elixir 🙂

Here is what you will need:

  • Virgin Coconut Oil – Available at most grocery / health food stores. I purchased mine from Trader Joe’s for about $6.
  • Castor Oil – Some will argue that classic unscented castor oil works better, but I used a coconut scented one because I thought it would blend well with the coconut oil.
  • Moroccan Argan Oil – This is optional, but I like adding it for extra shine.
  • Plastic Shower Cap – So you don’t get grease stains on everything in sight
  • Wide tooth comb or brush – I actually used my boar bristle brush to better distribute the oils throughout my hair

Directions:

Bring the coconut oil to above room temperature, so that it is very soft or a liquid. Combine equal parts coconut oil, castor oil, and argan oil into a bowl. Work oil mixture into hair, beginning at the scalp and massaging into roots. Apply mixture all the way to the end of your hair. After using my fingers to work the oil into my strands, I use my boar bristle brush or comb to help evenly distribute the mixture throughout my hair. Once hair is coated with the oil, place a plastic shower cap on to lock in heat. If you are pressed for time or need deeper hydration, use your hair dryer on low heat to help open the hair follicles to soak in the oils. You can leave the oil in your hair anywhere from fifteen minutes to overnight. I like to do this treatment before I start a Netflix show or catch up on emails, so that at least an hour passes before I rinse.

Once finishing the oil treatment, shampoo the oil out, and condition like normal. Test your hair before applying leave-in conditioners or extra styling products, because I typically don’t need nearly as much following this treatment.

Let me know if you like this treatment as much as I do! I have a few other recommendations that I plan to cover in the future for strengthening and growing hair.

May we all have mermaid hair soon!

xx Heather
