Mermaid Hair Elixir

Posted on by 4 comments

Hi Ladies!

For the last few months, I have been focusing on restoring the strength and health back into my hair. I have posted about a coconut oil mask in the past, but now I have a coconut hair mask 2.0! I want to call it the mermaid hair elixir, because 1) every girl wants long healthy mermaid hair and 2) the word “elixir” is just way cooler sounding than “mixture,” plus this hair mask is truly a magical potion!

I was introduced to castor oil as a hair treatment within the last year. I use it on its own and in this mask treatment, and can definitely see the benefit from it. Castor oil is full of omega 6 fatty acids and ricinoleic acid which both help to improve blood flow to the scalp and support hair growth. Coconut oil will also help to stimulate hair growth and increase shine. The argan oil will help to make hair silky and prevent split ends. Massaging these oils into your scalp will help to strengthen your hair roots, growing longer, healthier hair.

My hair has been so damaged recently that I have been trying to use this mask at least every two weeks to get the healthier hair I am after. I stocked up on some supplies to create my homemade Mermaid Hair Elixir 🙂

Here is what you will need:

  • Virgin Coconut Oil – Available at most grocery / health food stores. I purchased mine from Trader Joe’s for about $6.
  • Castor Oil – Some will argue that classic unscented castor oil works better, but I used a coconut scented one because I thought it would blend well with the coconut oil.
  • Moroccan Argan Oil – This is optional, but I like adding it for extra shine.
  • Plastic Shower Cap – So you don’t get grease stains on everything in sight
  • Wide tooth comb or brush – I actually used my boar bristle brush to better distribute the oils throughout my hair

Directions:

Bring the coconut oil to above room temperature, so that it is very soft or a liquid. Combine equal parts coconut oil, castor oil, and argan oil into a bowl. Work oil mixture into hair, beginning at the scalp and massaging into roots. Apply mixture all the way to the end of your hair. After using my fingers to work the oil into my strands, I use my boar bristle brush or comb to help evenly distribute the mixture throughout my hair. Once hair is coated with the oil, place a plastic shower cap on to lock in heat. If you are pressed for time or need deeper hydration, use your hair dryer on low heat to help open the hair follicles to soak in the oils. You can leave the oil in your hair anywhere from fifteen minutes to overnight. I like to do this treatment before I start a Netflix show or catch up on emails, so that at least an hour passes before I rinse.

Once finishing the oil treatment, shampoo the oil out, and condition like normal. Test your hair before applying leave-in conditioners or extra styling products, because I typically don’t need nearly as much following this treatment.

Let me know if you like this treatment as much as I do! I have a few other recommendations that I plan to cover in the future for strengthening and growing hair.

May we all have mermaid hair soon!

Deep in the Heart of Texas

Hey Y’all,

I hope you had a great week! I was in Austin, Texas for a work event about a week ago and decided to stay over the weekend with a friend. Can I just say, Austin is the coolest city ever!! I’ve been before but only just for work again, so this felt like my first time actually exploring. There was more barbecue, Tex-Mex, and better shopping than I could’ve imagined.

Here are some of the things we did:

Brunch and Shopping in SoCo

South Congress Street, also known as SoCo, is full of different restaurants, shops, and food trucks. I loved it because there were funky antique shops mixed with high-end boutiques along the street. I had to practice some SERIOUS self-control here. My recent obsession is looking for pieces to decorate my future loft (which I don’t actuallyyyy own yet), so hopefully next time I’m in Austin, I’ll be able to actually shop all the cool boutiques for housewares and furniture.

We ate brunch on the outdoor patio of the South Congress Cafe, and I definitely recommend trying it if you are in Austin. Order the migas breakfast enchiladas, and thank me later!

Barton Springs

The Barton Springs area is a gorgeous natural spring, which is typically dammed up to create a natural swimming pool. Just our luck, the Barton Springs Pool was closed for conservation efforts only the weekend we were in town! Instead we hung out in the river just beyond the dam, where people were wading in the water, picnicking, and enjoying their Saturdays. The year-round 72 degree water was perfect for cooling off after a long day of walking around. I loved that the water was so clear too, I could easily see all the way to the bottom of the river. (I hate not being able to see my feet when swimming in natural water. I always have this fear of creepy crawlies coming to bite my toes.)

Rainey Street

Rainey Street is a another neat area in South Austin. The street is lined with old houses that have all been converted into trendy bars and restaurants. Because the weather is so nice year-round, all the house bars had great outdoor areas to sit and hang out with friends. I loved that each place along the street had a different vibe. I went from drinking a local craft beer and hanging out on a hammock at one bar to drinking a Moscow mule and listening to live music at another place. I felt like that summed up Austin pretty well 🙂 There were also a bunch of food trucks on Rainey for the late night snackers, which brings me to my next point.

Food Trucks

The food trucks in Austin are TOP NOTCH. Texans do not mess around with these things. Some of the best food you will find in the city is from a food truck. One of the nights, my friend and I were both craving tacos, so we asked locals for the best place, and they all said Torchy’s Tacos. We were originally stopping by the taco joint for a snack but went a little crazy after seeing the menu. We each tried some tacos, queso, street corn, and lil’ nookies, which are deep-fried chocolate chip cookies!! All amazing and affordable. Thank you, Austin locals, the tacos were great. And side note: I seriously haven’t stopped thinking about those lil’ nookies.

I am already looking forward to the next time I am able to visit this city (hopefully sooner than I think).

“Keep Austin Weird!”

Hi All,

I hope you had a great start to the new year. I have busier in the last six months than I have ever been before!! Hoping for a slow down soon, so I can return to blogging.

They say that busyness is a blessing (but I also think too much can be a burden at times). I have been struggling to find free time outside of my work life, and I recently have been finding myself daydreaming about taking a long vacation or road trip to escape “real life” for a bit 🙂 The notes on my iPhone are full of places around the USA that I want to stop by on a road trip and also places around the world that I want to visit in the next few years. Once I add a new place to my list, I can’t help but fixate on it, researching places to stay and things to do in the city. I have too many trips planned in my head! My goal for this year is to begin traveling (for fun) more often.  More to come on this topic.

Have a great rest of your week!

Hi everyone,

I hope you had an awesome week. I wanted to share a casual weekend outfit that is sure to bring some color to your typical look! I fell in love with this Free People top because I think it is so much fun with all the stripes of color. Plus it is completely different from everything I have been wearing recently. It reminds me of a sunset! This tunic would be perfect with some dark skinny jeans or even tucked into cutoff shorts. I originally wasn’t wearing my utility vest on top of it, but the tunic is pretty thin and the evening was a bit breezy.

I put on a pale pink shoulder bag and my FAVORITE platform wedges by Marc Fisher to complete the look. I swear these wedges could make any outfit look 10x cooler. (Definitely worth a bit of a splurge in my book.)

I can’t believe that summer is coming to a close already. I feel like it never even began for me (so, this is adulthood, huh?) With a hectic work schedule, I seem to lose track of time. My younger siblings are getting ready to head off to their college campuses soon, and I can’t help but be jealous. I love the thought of a fresh school year and being back with all my friends.

For those of you who are lucky enough to be heading off to a college town soon, stay tuned! I’m going to be putting together some easy (and cheap) ways to spruce up your dorm room and some quick but cute outfit ideas for heading to class.

Until then, happy weekend!

Keeping my Blonde Hair, Blonde

Posted on by

BLNDN 1 BLNDN 2 BLNDN 3TONE YOU Toning Rinse: BLNDN  //  NOURISH YOU Nourishing Conditioner: BLNDN

If you have light-colored hair (especially if chemically treated), it is likely you have to deal with a little bit more upkeep than your brunette friends. Overtime, pale blonde hair tends to get brassy due to the elements and fading color. Additionally, pool water isn’t always a blonde’s best friend.

In order to keep your blonde light and bright, you’ll need to tone it in between salon visits. There are several ways you can do this, but I like to use toning products in the shower. I typically use a toning shampoo or BLNDN’s toning rinse once a week (using toning products every time you wash your hair can be drying to your strands). Blonde toning products are bright purple to cancel out the unwanted yellowy orange hues and bring your hair to the brighter desired shade of blonde.

When using a purple shampoo, I make sure to lather really well all throughout my hair and then let it sit for a minute or two to make sure each strand is scrubbed of the brassy color. When using BLNDN’s toning rinse, I use it between my regular shampoo and conditioner, again covering each strand and letting it sit for a few minutes. It is much stronger than toning shampoo, so be sure not to leave it on too long or else you’ll step out of the shower with a greyish tint to the lighter sections of hair. I speak from experience. 🙂
